Cleaning and Lubricant Reliability in Electrical System Breaker
Intro
SKL Maintenance Systems Corporation case study APAC0019 – Chesterton products – Chesterton Industrial Lubricants
In all businesses and organisations, electrical systems will make or break operations. When such systems show signs of damage it’s nearly impossible for a business to work to its full capacity, therefore it is vital that wires and cables are protected. That’s where Chesterton® products like the 296 Electro-Contact Cleaner and the 601 Chain Drive Pin and Bushing Lubricant come in.
Products featured in the case study:
Chain Drive Pin and Bushing Lubricant
Chesterton 296 Electro-Contact Cleaner
Challenge
A local contact cleaner was previously used which was odorous when applied in an enclosed room and does not completely achieve metal-to-metal contact in the relay contacts due to the dirt and moisture settling inside the protective relays. This could cause tripping and downtime of electrical system when induced draft fan breaks down due to high current.
Induced draft fan
Product
A combination of two Chesterton® products were recommended and applied to the relays inside the medium voltage breaker.
Chesterton® 296 Electro-Contact Cleaner was sprayed on protective relays to prevent damage and malfunction of cables.
Chesterton® 601 Chain Drive Pin and Bushing Lubricant was applied also on the relay contacts of medium voltage breakers to avoid build up of dirt.
Protective relay applied with 296 ECC and 601 CDPBL which is found inside medium voltage breaker
Results
Increased Reliability
The following features have been observed after the applications:
- Effectively signals when motor is at high current
- Prevention of the possibility of induced draft fan breakdown
- 296 ECC and 601 CDPBL are now a stock item in the plant as both passed their standards in the maintenance
Medium voltage breaker maintained with 296 ECC and 601 CDPBL
ROI
When given a scenario for a break down of the Induced Draft Fan, the client calculated a huge saving of $491,034.55USD on the basis of breakdown costs, downtime, labor, and equipment.
