Dealing with Pulp and Paper Plant’s Chest Damage with Chesterton ARC!

A pulp and paper customer was dealing with damage within a chest caused by falling concrete pieces. Due to the need to add hydrochloric acid to regulate pH levels, the mortar wall within was being damaged. Chesterton experts recommended the Chesterton ARC 791 Industrial Coating, a highly chemical resistant coating that can bond to damp concrete. After eight years, the results speak for themselves, and the customer chose to apply more of the product to other areas of the plant.

Chesterton ARC 791


The inside mortar surface of a chest has been damaged with concrete pieces falling into the paper roll, damaging the roll.

Root Cause
The mortar is being damaged by the addition of hydrochloric acid to regulate the pH in the chest.

The customer requires a solution to prevent damage to the mortar and prevent the occurrence of contamination, extending MTBF (mean time before failure).

FRP and other methods were not adopted because they were expensive, and a partial repair was not possible.

After cleaning brittle mortar from the chest walls with a high-pressure water, the Chesterton team applied ARC 791 Industrial Coating, four system test kit, to a 16 m2 test surface in August 2013.

ARC 791
100% solids, high-build, quartz (SiO2) reinforced, highly chemically resistant, modified epoxy coating that can bond to damp concrete.

ARC 791 industrial coating is designed to:

  • Resurface concrete damaged by chemical attack or
    mechanical stress
  • Replace acid resistant tiles, epoxy mortars, fiberglass,
    and conventional overlayments
  • Bond to damp concrete, making substrate
    impermeable for aggressive chemicals
  • Apply to vertical substrates at nominal dft of 6 mm
    (240 mils) using ARC 797 primer
  • Easily apply by trowel

After 8 years, an inspection revealed that the test area was unaffected however, the remaining areas were further damaged. The customer decided to coat the entire chest in May 2021 using Chesterton ARC 791. The customer is very satisfied with the result and will continue to use Chesterton Industrial Coating ARC 791 in other chests in the future
