These specially-designed, high-strength springs deliver a reserve of elastic energy to each bolt, allowing them to maintain a constant load on the flange and gasket during normal operation, or during thermal cycles. The customer experienced frequent leakage from the front and rear channel heads on two heat exchangers, specifically during startup and shutdown cycles.
The challenge had been persistent since the initial commissioning of the heat exchangers. Hot torquing of bolts required to reduce leakage.
Chesterton® 5505H Live Loading Springs, new gasket, 725 anti-seize and correct torque were proposed in April 2018 during a major turnaround.
80 springs x 4 flanges = 320 springs installed.
All leakage issues have been eliminated, therefore there is no release of hydrocarbon vapours, which has reduced the likelihood of severe hazards. Furthermore, hot torquing is no longer required, the customer experienced no loss of process vapour, and no downtime. Costs have dramatically reduced and safety has dramatically improved.
