A client’s gate valves had to operate to maximum efficiency under extremely challenging circumstances. With hands-on service to see the installation process through to the end, our special spring seals got the job done! Needing to pass API 6A PR2 tests, equipment with Chesterton seals passed with flying colours, and the client was satisfied with the end results.

Challenge

Our client in China operated under a temperature range of -46°C to 180°C with equipment performing under pressures of up to 20,000psi. This large temperature range and high pressure maximum made it a challenging environment for seals to successfully operate to their full potential.

Solution

With a API 6A PR2 requirement, the number of possible seals was limited, and with competitors’ seals failing, the client turned to Chesterton for their products and solutions. Chesterton experts and specialists worked directly with the client to design and successfully install one of our Spring Energised Seals.

Spring-energised seals​ typically consist of a polymer jacket and a metallic spring that provides a consistent load throughout the circumference ​of the seal and creates a leak-tight seal between the jacket and the hardware. The system pressure creates an additional sealing force between the jacket and the hardware.  In this combination, the spring forces the seal lips against the gland and rod surfaces, while pressure assists the spring force.
