Improving resistance wear to corn mill transition pipe with ARC Industrial Coatings

Severe abrasion from corn milling residues being blown at high velocity was causing damage to the internals of a “T” transition piece in a blow line, wearing through the cross section in as little as 12-15 months, leading to product loss and costly weld repairs.

Our client was looking to improve wear resistance to >15 months, along with the ability to make repairs in field.

Solution

Preparation

  • Decontaminate surfaces to remove corn milling residues.
  • Abrasive grit blast to SP10 cleanliness with 3-5 mil angular profile.

Application

  • A Chesterton specialist trowel applied ARC MX FG between 6-9 mm (.25-.325”).

ARC MX FG coated “T” transition piece

​​​​​​​​​​ARC MX FG is a trowel applied 100% solids, zero VOC, ceramic-reinforced epoxy coating designed for protecting surfaces against dry and wet slurry abrasive flow. This two-part system complies to 21 CFR 175.300 and is suited for direct food contact.​

Results

Our client was pleased to report the two ARC MX FG coated sections of the “T” transition piece have been in service since early 2020 with no sign of abrasive wear through to substrate.
